My Ethical Statement: Striving for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
My Ethical Statement
In order to create an atmosphere where body acceptance and body freedom are cultivated, I believe we need to be rooted in love, compassion and justice.
I want you to know where I am coming from and what drives my work. When you know what my perspective is, you will be able to make an informed decision on working together.
I believe that we deserve to live in a world free from anti-fat bias and stigma. I believe that Health at Every Size®, Intuitive Eating, body respect, and Body Trust® are philosophies that offer an alternative paradigm to our culture's views of weight and wellness. In order to create an atmosphere where body acceptance and body freedom are cultivated, I believe we need to be rooted in love, compassion and justice.
I believe that opposing all forms of body terrorism is necessary to work towards body acceptance and body freedom. I believe that everyone has the right to live freely in their bodies without the threat of any form of fear or violence.
I believe you are whole as you are. I believe each person has the right to decide what their definition of health is. You do not owe health to anyone. Health is not a moral imperative.
While I am fat, female, queer, and non-binary, I recognize that being a working-class, white person has afforded me many unearned privileges. I respect and honor different life experiences. I believe diversity is an asset. Innovation, creativity and power are cultivated when we experience diversity in relationship. I am committed to continuing to humbly learn, acknowledge, and address my blindspots.
Resilient Fat Goddess promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values. I recognize all types of diversity including ethnicity, race, size, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, class, religion, immigration status, and abilities.
My own experience influences my passion for social justice with a basis in radical self-acceptance and body liberation for fat, thin, infinifat, medium, superfat, chubby, large, skinny, tall, short, disabled, able-bodied, chronically ill, undocumented, immigrant, asylee, refugee, brown, black, East Asian, Indian, Middle-Eastern, African, Indigenous, Latinx, Hispanic, white, queer, straight, bisexual, pansexual, trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, genderqueer, asexual, polyamorous, monogamous, sex worker, and cis gender bodies.
I believe our sessions are a partnership to work towards what you choose. I believe you are the expert on your body. I believe in trauma-informed practices. You are not your trauma.
I believe most of what you have learned about bodies in our culture is wrong. I am here to support you in discovering new ways to relate to and care for your body that are not rooted in shame and diet culture. I know how hard living with anti-fat bias and stigma is in our culture. I am here to remind you to locate the problem outside of your body.
Part of the work I do at Resilient Fat Goddess is consult, train, and educate health care providers on how to be weight-inclusive and respectful in their work. It is not enough to provide support to those harmed by weight-centric practices. I believe we must take a systemic approach to ending fat stigma.
I believe incredible things happen when someone compassionately listens to your story. I believe self-compassion, body liberation, and fat liberation have the capacity to change the world.
I believe you will find out who you are without constant body shame and food challenges. I believe there is something different on the other side of your pain and discomfort. Maybe working with me will bring you closer to learning who you are, what you desire, and what brings you joy and pleasure.
I acknowledge the harm that capitalism causes people, particularly those with marginalized identities. If I had it my way, I would be able to offer services for free. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to completely dismantle capitalism yet!
I trust your judgement to determine if you need to use my sliding scale fees or set up a different arrangement. I am committed to working with people where they are.
If you are interested in contributing to a fund to help people have access to my services, please contact me. Contributions to this fund and those who pay full price make it possible for everyone to get what they need.
